Improving the lives of patients who have complex medical needs takes more than just skill and compassion. It takes a team approach. At Acuity Specialty Hospital, we provide a multidisciplinary team – nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and others to provide specialized care to all our patients. We recognize that no two patients are the same. That's why we develop a personalized Plan of Care for each patient.
At Acuity, patients and their families are an active and essential part of our treatment team. We believe knowledge is power. We give our patients and their loved ones the information they need to be a part of the recovery process. We encourage questions and take a collaborative approach to finding the right Plan of Care for each patient and tailoring it to fit his or her needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are LTACs different from general acute care hospitals?
General acute care hospitals only focus on stabilizing the patient's medical condition and treating them for a short period of time. Long term acute care hospitals offer structured programs and treatments for patients suffering from complex medical illness.
Is Acuity’s staff qualified to care for critically ill and/or medically complex patients?
Yes. Our hospital is staffed with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)-certified nurses and respiratory therapists. Our multidisciplinary treatment teams are directed by highly trained, dedicated physicians and include healthcare professionals involved in all aspects of a patient’s care: nurses, respiratory therapists, radiologists, pharmacists, dietitians and case managers.
How long will I be a patient at Acuity?
Our average length of stay is between 25 to 30 days.
How often are patients seen by their physician?
Each patient's care is seen by their physician who monitors their progress and develops a treatment plan based on his or her individual needs. Patients also have round-the-clock access to nurses, respiratory therapists and other professionals.
Do I have to pay for TV or telephone service?
No. Televisions and telephones (local calls) are provided free of charge to all patients.
What about nutritional needs?
Our dietitian works closely with other members of the treatment team to create a nutritional plan tailored to each patient's needs and preferences.
How often does a patient receive therapy each day?
All patients receive therapies according to their tolerance and their need. While we believe patients at all stages of the recovery process benefit from early and aggressive intervention and therapy, we develop a tailored Plan of Care for each patient based on his or her abilities and needs.
Does Acuity have case managers to provide me with regular updates and assist with discharge planning?
Yes. Case managers work to develop and maintain an individualized Plan of Care bringing together other members from the treatment team for routine meetings (Patient Care Conferences) to discuss each patient's progress. Case managers also provide education, support, and discharge planning services to patients and their families.
When and how is a patient's Plan of Care reviewed?
Following an initial meeting with the entire treatment team, each patient's progress is reviewed by the multidisciplinary team on a weekly basis (Patient Care Conference) or more frequently as needed. By sharing information across all medical disciplines, we are able to set and meet the goals of healing and recovery.
